Eisenhower and Adenauer 1959 |
On 7 April 1953 Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer (CDU) arrives in Washington for his first visit to the USA. In discussions with President Dwight D. Eisenhower he affirms German willingness to make its contribution to the European Defence Community (EVG), even in the event – not really anticipated by anyone – of a unification of the two German states. In return Eisenhower guarantees aid in building up the German contingent within the EVG. On 9 April 1953 the two heads of government sign an agreement promoting cultural exchanges. Adenauer’s next stop is the Canadian capital city Ottawa.
