Allied landing south of Rome

Since early September 1944 the allied armies have been fighting their way from Southern Italy northward with heavy casualties. To support them, troops of the 5th American Army land on 22 January 1944 near Anzio and Nettuno south of Rome and thereby outflank the German front. In May the US units will join up with the forces advancing from Southern Italy – after an orderly German retreat to positions in the Apennines („Green Line“). On 4 June the Allies will march into Rome to the cheers of the local population.
