Western Allied Headquarters inform Berlin Mayor Ernst Reuter (SPD) on 1 July 1949 that Berlin’s participation in upcoming elections to the 1st German Federal Diet are prohibited due to the city’s special Four-Powers status. Berlin’s representatives to the Federal Diet will have to be elected by the City Parliament. Not until 1990 – after re-establishment of German unity – will they granted full voting power in the German Federal Diet.
