British counter offensive at El Alamein begins
On 23 October 1942, under the leadership of General Bernard L. Montgomery and with vastly superior forces, Britain’s 8th Army begins a counter-offensive against the Axis Powers at El Alamein (Egypt). Reinforcement materials, especially petrol, are in short supply on the German-Italian front, and resistance falls apart rapidly. The British are able to advance into Libya within a few days.
