Churchill’s re-election as Prime Minister
On 25 October 1951 Winston Churchill, the renowned British Prime Minister and Minister of Defence during the Second World War, is again elected by the Lower House of Parliament as head of government. The conservative politician, along with US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, laid the cornerstone for the United Nations by formulating the 1941 Atlantic Charter. First and foremost during his four-year term of office, Churchill will advocate a relaxation of tensions between East and West and the strengthening of European unity. However, he will categorically reject Great Britain’s participation in the „European Coal and Steel Community“ or in the planned „European Economic Community“.
