King Fuad I

The Egyptian nationalist movement (Wafd) is the dominant political force in the country at the beginning of the twentieth century. Pressure on London to give up its protectorate continues to grow. On 28 February 1922, Egypt finally gains the status of an independent kingdom under Fuad I. However, Egyptian foreign policy, the Suez Canal, and the administration of the Sudan continue to remain under British control. British troops stationed in Egypt also remain in the country.
