Manuel Azaña (1880-1940), politician and novellist |
General Francisco Franco’s fascist troops have succeeded in bringing almost all of Spain under their control. On 27 February 1939 the British and French governments finally make official their recognition of the Franco-regime in Spain – a step which followed on the heels of passionate debates. Within the next few days, Madrid and Valencia, the last two citadels of those loyal to the Republican government, fall into the hands of the Fascists. President Manuel Azaña is forced to flee the country. The Spanish Civil War, which has raged since 1936, ends with the defeat of democratic forces.
