Fall offensive begins in Champagne province

On 22 September 1915, the Allies begin a new offensive against the German army in Champagne province. The intention is to relieve their heavily afflicted Russian ally.

View into the no-man's-land

The French army supplies the main force and sends in 27 divisions. In the following weeks, 1,660 pieces of ordnance fire over five million grenades at German positions. However, a decisive breakthrough at the front remains unattainable. After 50 days, allied losses add up to 250,000 men. The Germans have ca. 150,000 dead to mourn.
