Two German pilots, Hermann Köhl and Günther Ehrenfried Freiherr von Hünefeld together with their Irish colleague James C. Fitzmaurice, succeed on 13 April 1928 in making the first trans-Atlantic flight in the East/West direction. Having started in Ireland, the German-Irish team lands its single-engine Junkers aeroplane on Greenley Island near Newfoundland after a 35-hour flight. Köhl and von Hünefeld are acclaimed as heroes in Germany.
