Founding the Comintern

On 2 March 1919, the Communist International (Comintern) is founded in Moscow. Due to its centralised organisational structure, Moscow can be sure of having a powerful influence on all the national parties affiliated with it.

The Communist Party of Germany (KPD) also joins the Comintern. It becomes the implacable opponent of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) which, in contrast to the Communists, does not embark on the revolutionary but rather on the parliamentary-reformist pathway.
