Hyperinflation
The economic crisis in Germany sets off „galloping inflation“ (hyperinflation): the value of the mark sinks faster and faster. If a US dollar was equivalent to 1.49 marks in January 1919, by December 1922 it would take 1,808 marks to buy one dollar. By 8 February 1923, the US dollar was being traded for 6,650 marks, and by late 1923, the Germans will have to lay out a billion marks for one „greenback“.
