Nobile crashes

On 25 May 1928 Italian aircraft builder General Umberto Nobile, after having crossed the north pole, crashes with his air ship „Italia“ in the vicinity of Spitzbergen. Seven of the 16 crew members lose their lives. The survivors – including their commander – are able to radio for help. A sensational rescue operation begins. Nobile and his men are finally rescued on 12 July.
