Prohibition in the USA

On 16 January 1920 the prohibition law goes into effect in the United States. Production and consumption of alcoholic beverages are forbidden. The objective of the law is to reduce criminal activity in the country but completely fails to achieve this: The smuggle of alcohol across the borders of the country begins to flourish as do illegal distilleries. Gangsterism and corruption run rampant. In Chicago, Al Capone conducts his nefarious operations; not until 1931 can his activities be stopped. Two years after that, in 1933, prohibition in the USA is repealed.
