Red Army marches into Rumania

Rumania, which had had to accept extensive territorial losses to the Soviet Union in 1940, also took part in Germany’s aggression against the country. However, after the defeat at Stalingrad in early 1943, Bucharest started withdrawing its units from the eastern front in stages. While secret cease fire negotiations between the Rumanian government and the Allies are already underway, the Red Army marches into Rumania on 2 April 1944. A new government is formed and immediately declares war against the German Reich. Shortly before Hitler had ordered the bombardment of Bucharest.
