On 26 January 1940 Germany completes the resettlement of its citizens from the Soviet-occupied portion of Poland and from the Baltic states. As mandated by the „German-Soviet Non-Aggression Treaty“ of 23 August 1939 between the German Reich and the Soviet Union, tens of thousands of Germans had to return „home to the Reich“.
