In the First Balkan War (October 1912 - May 1913) the Balkan Federation nations of Montenegro, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Greece, which were allied against Turkey, secured large parts of Macedonia including the Aegean Islands. Shortly afterwards an exchange of blows occurs over the division of the spoils.

On 29 June 1913, Bulgaria attacks Serbia. Romania, Greece, Montenegro, and Turkey take sides with the country under attack. Bulgaria loses this Second Balkan War and has to surrender all its territorial gains from the First Balkan War (Peace of Bucharest in July 1913). From now on Serbia will constitute the major power in the „Powder Keg of Europe“, the constantly politically unstable Balkan. A year later it will be the point of origin for the First World War.
