Goldmine in southern Transvaal

For the most part, the mines near Johannesburg (South Africa) satisfy the worldwide demand for gold and diamonds. On 1 July 1913, however, production is interrupted by a strike of 20,000 mine workers. The military is called in. Violent clashes ensue, as a result of which ca. 100 persons lose their lives.
