Trotski's arrival in St. Petersburg in May 1917 |
Leon D. Trotsky returns to Russia from exile in America on 17 May 1917 and joins the Bolsheviks (communists). In the course of the “October Revolution” of 1917, he becomes chairman of the Petersburg Soviet (council) and is later elected People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs. After Lenin’s death in 1924, he is forced to flee to another country to escape the clutches of the new communist leader Josef Stalin. However, in 1940 the Russian intelligence service will track down and murder Trotsky in Mexico.
